This week, Dr Hazrati focused on our final examination. She recapped all those topics that we have learnt in this course throughout the semester. For my tutorial class, we had our last class and also presentation with Dr Fariza Khalid. For this course, we were assigned to develop AR project and to create a video. My friends and I did a video with a family bond theme. For AR, we decided to do on pregnancy development. I have to admit it was very hard for us to complete the assignment, but we managed to do it anyway. Our AR project have some improvements to be made but I think my friends and I did a good job on it and I am so proud of us.
To be frank, I enjoyed my last class. This is due to the fact that I am glad I managed to complete all the tasks in a given time, and I like how my last class was conducted. Dr Fariza managed to make it a collaborative and two-way learning. We gave feedbacks and received a constructive response form everyone else too. It was also fun to see how everyone showed their creativity through their project. All in all, I learnt a lot from this course. Not only how I can utilize innovation and technology in education, I also learnt how you can create a meaningful lesson for your students as all the lecturers have shown it through their lectures.

I believe that most of my classmates have already heard about Web 2.0. This was this week’s lesson conducted by Dr Hazrati. For those who have never heard of it, Web 2.0 is web-based platforms with simple to use interfaces that enable users to collectively contribute and share large amounts of information. Web 2.0 is quite convenient as you don’t have to install the apps in your computer. You can just run it through your surfer.
What are the benefits of using Web 2.0 in education? Firstly, it allows communication to happen. It also allows student-centered learning. Last but not least, it promotes students to develop their multimedia skills. But every good thing has their weaknesses too. Firstly, in most schools, we don’t have a good internet connection. Besides, the computers provided have a low specification. This makes it hard to fully utilize Web 2.0 in schools. Next, since our syllabus doesn’t really focus on IT, many Malaysian students are lack of digital skills. Hence, they tend to lose motivation when learning through Web 2.0 as they lack of exposure to technology. Other than that, some students face a problem in receiving response from their friends. This happens because their friends don’t show engagement in online learning platform. Last but not least is plagiarism. Web 2.0 allows students to access information easily. This caused students to take a simpler way to settle their assignment by copying it and paste it as a part of their answer. Despite all those weaknesses and challenges, I, as a Gen Z think that it is relevant for my generation and future generation to learn through Web 2.0. I think the older generation can get exposure on this matter too. This is because for some students, the conventional teaching method doesn’t work anymore. It makes them easily lose focus in the classroom. Therefore, to make sure the stay focus in class, teachers can vary their teaching method by implementing Web 2.0 in teaching.

On this week lecture, Dr Roseni thought us the Media Evaluation Process. These are the things that we must know in order to create a meaningful learning experience for the students. The process includes model, development, testing and assessment. To produce a good media that can be used in education, the four elements must be considered. It is important to ensure that the media is affective in delivering a lesson.
Dr Roseni cited from Jonassen, Peck and Wilson (1999) who agreed that there are 5 elements in teaching development process. The first one is learning should be active (manipulation and observation). And then, learning should be constructive (articulation and reflective). Followed by learning should be cooperative (collaborative and conventional) and authentic (complex and contextual). And last but not least, learning should have objectives (reflective and formative). Firstly, to develop a media for education or any teaching material, we must know the objectives and analyse it whether it cater the students’ needs or not. Next, a future teacher must ensure that her teaching method involved her/his students’ participation in classroom. Apart from that, an educator must also develop a cooperative teaching method where it requires her student to collaborate with each other in order to achieve the learning objective. And last but not least, a reflection from both the teacher and the student can be a good way to improve the teaching and learning experience as we get to hear both sides opinion on a particular matter. In Dr Roseni’s slides, she also focused on a few examples that is easy for us to understand. For me, I think she applied what she taught in her slides. Her messages were delivered clearly. There were not many points in her slides, but she explained it one by one and did not leave anything behind. Therefore, I think today’s lesson is important for teachers to deliver a meaningful and affective lessons. This week, Dr Siti gave a lecture on TPACK and Instructional Design. What does these two mean in education? Instructional Design means the a systematic and reflective process of applying or interpreting the teaching and learning principle in planning process of teaching and evaluating. There are several models that were explained to us and teachers may refer to any of the models as a guide lines for them to plan their teaching material. On the other hand, TPACK means technology, pedagogy and content knowledge. From what I understand, basically TPACK is a theory that was developed to explain the set of knowledge that teachers need to teach their students a subject, teach effectively, and use technology.
As we know, we are living in a world where technology is advancing at a tremendous rate, with new inventors beginning to think outside of the box on what is needed to enhance lives and our world around us. Hence, I think it is relevant if today’s or future teacher have to know how to use the technology and how to utilize the technology in their pedagogy. However, I think the main reason why most teachers are turning away from doing this is because of some problems. Cost, access, and time often form considerable barriers to classroom implementation, but another obstacle is a lack of knowledge regarding how technology can best be used to benefit students across diverse subject matter. Speaking from my experience, I’ve always found it easier for me to stay focus in class when my teacher used any form of technology in teaching. I prefer this way than the traditional teaching method as it can be quite boring sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, but it would be nice when they utilize the technology something that I am familiar with in teaching. In conclusion, teaching the future generation will be more affective if technology is implied to it. Therefore, future teacher must know the technology well and how to utilize it in the classroom. In today’s class, we learnt about learning theories. Being a student in Faculty of Education, I am certainly sure that this is something that is close to us. I am aware at the importance of mastering and knowing the learning theories as it is something that would be beneficial for a future teacher in order to plan their teaching material.
Firstly, we were introduced to the cognitivism, behaviourism and connectivism learning theory. I feel like connectivism is applied in this course and even in my daily life. This is because connectivism is a learning theory that explains how Internet technologies have created new opportunities for people to learn and share information across the World Wide Web and among themselves. I mostly learn or gain knowledge online. I think it is easier and convenient to cater my needs as for some topics I have to watch videos for deeper understanding. We live in a world full of diversity. As a future educator, we cannot assume that all our students have the same way of thinking or the same way of doing things. The reason why knowing these learning theories are so important is to avoid us from using an ineffective pedagogy, which of course resulting to a bigger problem in the future. To be frank, I never knew that these kind of theories exist. Yes, sounds ignorant but it is the truth. I’ve always wondered how do teachers came up with their teaching material? Is there any guidelines that they need to follow? From today’s topic I think I’ve understand a bit on how teachers plan their teaching material. Of course, knowing these theories will not make you an excellent teacher. There are many other things and knowledge we have to acquire to become a good teacher. But, knowing these theories and being able to apply it is one step closer to become a great educator. This week’s lecture emphasized on one of the elements of technology in education which is the Augmented Reality (AR). To be frank, before the class, I have never known what an AR could be. Of course I have come across it previously, but I did not know what it is called until this week’s class. I’m pretty sure I was not the only one who felt this way. Dr Fariza explained briefly on what exactly is Augmented Reality. Basically, AR is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.
What are the significance of AR being implemented in our education system? We are living in an era of advanced technology. These days, it is getting more challenging for teachers to get their students engagement in class. By applying AR, it might help teachers to capture students’ interest in learning. This is because AR is something that they are familiar with. It helps to vary the teaching and learning method rather than using the traditional approach. Based on my experience, AR is a good element to be used in the classroom. During my time, my teacher would use AR for a few topics or chapters to enhance our understanding on that particular topic. However, at that time, it was hard for teachers to get everyone to experience it as we have limited tools and sources to be shared with 40 students. I have to admit that learning using AR is really different that learning through other approaches. I had fun and it helps me a lot when I did my revision. All in all, what I have to say regarding AR is I think it might be an excellent idea to develop AR in our education. Emerging countries in the West have actually started applying AR in almost everything such as business, medicine and education. AR truly helps to deliver information more apprehendable. This week we learnt about gamification. It was conducted by Dr Norhafizah. She explained to us about what gamification is. At first, I thought gamification can only occur online, of course by using technology like Kahoot and Quizziz. But Dr Norhafizah told us that it can happen either online and offline. This is because the real definition of gamification is an educational approach to motivate students to learn by using game elements be it through video games design or even the learning environment itself. However, to implement gamification in education, we must be aware of the weaknesses of it. Firstly, I think our country internet access is not efficient enough to support this activity for all school in Malaysia. Next, I think it might be distracting for students because instead of gaining knowledge they perhaps will use this medium to do other things. In order to make this implementation a success, I believe it is crucial that the government provides the best facility so it will become more efficient and systematic. Last but not least, some teachers might think that this is going to be a waste of time as they have syllabus to finish before the school ends. Being a Gen Z myself, I admit that despite those weaknesses, gamification really helps teacher to deliver their lessons effectively. In gamification, there must be a good reinforcement which is by giving rewards to students. This will help to boost students’ confident in answering questions as they like the satisfaction of getting the right answers. Also I believe that gamification can ensure that everyone is involve in the classroom activity. Students can obtain skills that they will get only by doing group work. In an individual activity, they can polish their problem solving skill that will benefit them in the future. In conclusion, gamification is definitely an interesting approach to make students more focus and enjoy their learning process. This week’s lecture was conducted by Dr Hazrati. On this week, we learnt about graphic and multimedia. Dr Hazrati started her lecture by explaining several types of media. This week’s lecture is important as we need this knowledge for our assignments later. She explained to us the guidelines that we need to follow in order to create an interesting and informative graphic. I just found out that you don’t have to use lots of words to get your messages delivered. You can use various types of elements to provide information. For example, a person can use animation or pictures in their posters or graphic material to show the main idea of it. Now, just like I said, this week’s lesson is important for our assignments, however as a future teacher how do we make use of this knowledge?
Nowadays, even teachers find it easier to give lessons to students using graphic and multimedia methods. For example, power slides of lecture notes. From my point of view, by using graphic and multimedia, instructor can deliver their lessons without having to explain it in long words. Students can pay more attention through this way as the find it more interesting than the traditional teaching method. Speaking from my experience, the amount of students who slept in the classroom is lesser when my teacher explained it to us using animation and pictures. I, myself will also consider on using graphic and media as a part of my teaching plan. But I think most teachers would still prefer to use the traditional teaching methods because they think it is easier as they don’t really have much knowledge on graphic and media. Going to the tutorial class also makes me realized that my generation despite being the Gen Z, there are so many things that we don’t know especially on media. I think it is important for teachers to at least have the basic knowledge on graphic and multimedia so they can deliver lessons that the students find appealing. This week’s lecture was conducted by Dr Mohd Khalid. We learnt about the m learning and e-learning. What is m-learning and e-learning? That is the exact question that I had in my mind when I first heard of those two words. A feeling of regret surrounded myself for not revising the topic earlier. Dr Mohd Khalid started off his lecture by asking us the definition of those two words. He explained that e learning is learning conducted by electronic media. While, m-learning means mobile learning. Basically m-learning is under e-learning. According to Dr Mohd Khalid, there are many advantages on implementing e-learning in classroom. Not only they benefit the lecturers or educators, but e-learning also benefits the students. Firstly, online learning accommodates everyone’s needs. Based on what I had experienced myself, as e-learning is convenient and easy to access, I can easily look up for any lecture notes or practices according to my own availability. Next, m-learning makes the interaction between an instructor and a student easier. They don’t have to meet face to face to discuss on a particular topic. Last but not least, m-learning offers dynamic teaching methodologies.
As everyone knows, today’s generation is more familiar on using technology in their lives. Hence, it makes m-learning more reasonable in classroom. This is due to the fact that m-learning is extremely friendly to modern teaching methods. Teachers can use different types of approach to their students. They can deliver the lessons using audio, video and images. Moving on to the disadvantages of m-learning and e-learning. Dr Mohd Khalid told us that every good thing in this world can bring harm too. M-learning decrease the social interaction between an individual and another. Since they don’t have to see face to face to discuss, there is no verbal communication involved. My opinion on this matter is, m-learning can bring good to teachers and students, however in order to make this relevant in our country, we need to upgrade a few things. A good and upgraded facilities should be provided to each and every schools in this country to make it easier for educators and students to use the m-learning. To be honest, during the first week of this class, I didn’t know what to expect since I’ve never heard anything about this course even from seniors. I came early to class so I can prepare myself mentally for this course. The first lecture was conducted by Mejar Jasmy. He touched on the definition of Innovation and Technology and how to utilize it in teaching. He didn’t really touch much on the course’s introduction, but he gave some advice that is very useful and much needed for all of us as future teachers. He reminded us to be punctual. Yes, it is something that all of us know but not much of us can really do that. He opened my eyes that there are so many of us who take punctuality lightly. Punctuality is very crucial to future teachers. How do we expect our students to come early to class if we didn’t show the correct examples to them?
I also realized that it is important for future teachers to know how to utilize technology in their teaching material. Eventhough, I am a Gen Z myself, I admit that I also am not very familiar with technology. Hence, I think that this course is going to be beneficial to teachers. Future teachers must know the generation they are going to educate. They must plan a teaching material that can cater these students’ needs. Therefore, this course is important and I am glad that this course is offered this semester. Mejar Jasmy showed us a video on a group of students using drone as a part of their teaching plan. From my perspective of view, this is definitely a way to capture students’ interest and attention. However, we must also consider the fact that this is new to our country and there are not many people using it. To overcome this, there are some universities offering a course where you can learn how to use it and utilize it in your teaching. All in all, I think the first week of lecture opened my eyes on the importance of teachers using innovation and technology in their teaching. |
