This week, Dr Hazrati focused on our final examination. She recapped all those topics that we have learnt in this course throughout the semester. For my tutorial class, we had our last class and also presentation with Dr Fariza Khalid. For this course, we were assigned to develop AR project and to create a video. My friends and I did a video with a family bond theme. For AR, we decided to do on pregnancy development. I have to admit it was very hard for us to complete the assignment, but we managed to do it anyway. Our AR project have some improvements to be made but I think my friends and I did a good job on it and I am so proud of us.
To be frank, I enjoyed my last class. This is due to the fact that I am glad I managed to complete all the tasks in a given time, and I like how my last class was conducted. Dr Fariza managed to make it a collaborative and two-way learning. We gave feedbacks and received a constructive response form everyone else too. It was also fun to see how everyone showed their creativity through their project. All in all, I learnt a lot from this course. Not only how I can utilize innovation and technology in education, I also learnt how you can create a meaningful lesson for your students as all the lecturers have shown it through their lectures.

I believe that most of my classmates have already heard about Web 2.0. This was this week’s lesson conducted by Dr Hazrati. For those who have never heard of it, Web 2.0 is web-based platforms with simple to use interfaces that enable users to collectively contribute and share large amounts of information. Web 2.0 is quite convenient as you don’t have to install the apps in your computer. You can just run it through your surfer.
What are the benefits of using Web 2.0 in education? Firstly, it allows communication to happen. It also allows student-centered learning. Last but not least, it promotes students to develop their multimedia skills. But every good thing has their weaknesses too. Firstly, in most schools, we don’t have a good internet connection. Besides, the computers provided have a low specification. This makes it hard to fully utilize Web 2.0 in schools. Next, since our syllabus doesn’t really focus on IT, many Malaysian students are lack of digital skills. Hence, they tend to lose motivation when learning through Web 2.0 as they lack of exposure to technology. Other than that, some students face a problem in receiving response from their friends. This happens because their friends don’t show engagement in online learning platform. Last but not least is plagiarism. Web 2.0 allows students to access information easily. This caused students to take a simpler way to settle their assignment by copying it and paste it as a part of their answer. Despite all those weaknesses and challenges, I, as a Gen Z think that it is relevant for my generation and future generation to learn through Web 2.0. I think the older generation can get exposure on this matter too. This is because for some students, the conventional teaching method doesn’t work anymore. It makes them easily lose focus in the classroom. Therefore, to make sure the stay focus in class, teachers can vary their teaching method by implementing Web 2.0 in teaching.

On this week lecture, Dr Roseni thought us the Media Evaluation Process. These are the things that we must know in order to create a meaningful learning experience for the students. The process includes model, development, testing and assessment. To produce a good media that can be used in education, the four elements must be considered. It is important to ensure that the media is affective in delivering a lesson.
Dr Roseni cited from Jonassen, Peck and Wilson (1999) who agreed that there are 5 elements in teaching development process. The first one is learning should be active (manipulation and observation). And then, learning should be constructive (articulation and reflective). Followed by learning should be cooperative (collaborative and conventional) and authentic (complex and contextual). And last but not least, learning should have objectives (reflective and formative). Firstly, to develop a media for education or any teaching material, we must know the objectives and analyse it whether it cater the students’ needs or not. Next, a future teacher must ensure that her teaching method involved her/his students’ participation in classroom. Apart from that, an educator must also develop a cooperative teaching method where it requires her student to collaborate with each other in order to achieve the learning objective. And last but not least, a reflection from both the teacher and the student can be a good way to improve the teaching and learning experience as we get to hear both sides opinion on a particular matter. In Dr Roseni’s slides, she also focused on a few examples that is easy for us to understand. For me, I think she applied what she taught in her slides. Her messages were delivered clearly. There were not many points in her slides, but she explained it one by one and did not leave anything behind. Therefore, I think today’s lesson is important for teachers to deliver a meaningful and affective lessons. This week, Dr Siti gave a lecture on TPACK and Instructional Design. What does these two mean in education? Instructional Design means the a systematic and reflective process of applying or interpreting the teaching and learning principle in planning process of teaching and evaluating. There are several models that were explained to us and teachers may refer to any of the models as a guide lines for them to plan their teaching material. On the other hand, TPACK means technology, pedagogy and content knowledge. From what I understand, basically TPACK is a theory that was developed to explain the set of knowledge that teachers need to teach their students a subject, teach effectively, and use technology.
As we know, we are living in a world where technology is advancing at a tremendous rate, with new inventors beginning to think outside of the box on what is needed to enhance lives and our world around us. Hence, I think it is relevant if today’s or future teacher have to know how to use the technology and how to utilize the technology in their pedagogy. However, I think the main reason why most teachers are turning away from doing this is because of some problems. Cost, access, and time often form considerable barriers to classroom implementation, but another obstacle is a lack of knowledge regarding how technology can best be used to benefit students across diverse subject matter. Speaking from my experience, I’ve always found it easier for me to stay focus in class when my teacher used any form of technology in teaching. I prefer this way than the traditional teaching method as it can be quite boring sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, but it would be nice when they utilize the technology something that I am familiar with in teaching. In conclusion, teaching the future generation will be more affective if technology is implied to it. Therefore, future teacher must know the technology well and how to utilize it in the classroom. In today’s class, we learnt about learning theories. Being a student in Faculty of Education, I am certainly sure that this is something that is close to us. I am aware at the importance of mastering and knowing the learning theories as it is something that would be beneficial for a future teacher in order to plan their teaching material.
Firstly, we were introduced to the cognitivism, behaviourism and connectivism learning theory. I feel like connectivism is applied in this course and even in my daily life. This is because connectivism is a learning theory that explains how Internet technologies have created new opportunities for people to learn and share information across the World Wide Web and among themselves. I mostly learn or gain knowledge online. I think it is easier and convenient to cater my needs as for some topics I have to watch videos for deeper understanding. We live in a world full of diversity. As a future educator, we cannot assume that all our students have the same way of thinking or the same way of doing things. The reason why knowing these learning theories are so important is to avoid us from using an ineffective pedagogy, which of course resulting to a bigger problem in the future. To be frank, I never knew that these kind of theories exist. Yes, sounds ignorant but it is the truth. I’ve always wondered how do teachers came up with their teaching material? Is there any guidelines that they need to follow? From today’s topic I think I’ve understand a bit on how teachers plan their teaching material. Of course, knowing these theories will not make you an excellent teacher. There are many other things and knowledge we have to acquire to become a good teacher. But, knowing these theories and being able to apply it is one step closer to become a great educator. This week’s lecture emphasized on one of the elements of technology in education which is the Augmented Reality (AR). To be frank, before the class, I have never known what an AR could be. Of course I have come across it previously, but I did not know what it is called until this week’s class. I’m pretty sure I was not the only one who felt this way. Dr Fariza explained briefly on what exactly is Augmented Reality. Basically, AR is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.
What are the significance of AR being implemented in our education system? We are living in an era of advanced technology. These days, it is getting more challenging for teachers to get their students engagement in class. By applying AR, it might help teachers to capture students’ interest in learning. This is because AR is something that they are familiar with. It helps to vary the teaching and learning method rather than using the traditional approach. Based on my experience, AR is a good element to be used in the classroom. During my time, my teacher would use AR for a few topics or chapters to enhance our understanding on that particular topic. However, at that time, it was hard for teachers to get everyone to experience it as we have limited tools and sources to be shared with 40 students. I have to admit that learning using AR is really different that learning through other approaches. I had fun and it helps me a lot when I did my revision. All in all, what I have to say regarding AR is I think it might be an excellent idea to develop AR in our education. Emerging countries in the West have actually started applying AR in almost everything such as business, medicine and education. AR truly helps to deliver information more apprehendable. |
